What is osteopathic medicine?
Osteopathic Medicine at Upper Echelon
At Upper Echelon Medical, our osteopathic doctors are highly skilled in osteopathic manipulative techniques (OMT), a hands-on approach used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness and injury. Osteopathic manipulative treatments address a wide range of symptoms and conditions, including pain relief, headache relief, and improved function and mobility. While not every patient will need OMT, our osteopathic doctors incorporate these techniques into treatment plans when they believe it will benefit you.
During OMT, your physician uses their hands to evaluate muscles, joints, connective tissues, and other parts of the musculoskeletal system. Depending on what your physician identifies during the examination, different manual techniques may be used to address areas of tension, restricted motion, or discomfort.
OMT is not a single technique. Treatment can involve different forms of pressure, stretching, resistance, positioning, and movement depending on the patient's condition and treatment goals. Not every patient or medical condition requires osteopathic manipulation. Your physician will determine whether OMT is appropriate after evaluating your symptoms and overall health.
A Whole-Person Approach to Pain and Mobility
Osteopathic medicine emphasizes looking at the patient as a whole rather than treating one symptom in isolation. For example, discomfort in one area may be influenced by movement patterns, previous injuries, muscle tension, activity, occupation, or other health factors.
Upper Echelon Medical applies this philosophy throughout our integrative primary care model. In addition to OMT, your physician may discuss physical activity, ergonomics, exercise, sleep, nutrition, stress, or other factors relevant to your condition. When appropriate, osteopathic manipulation can be incorporated alongside other medical treatments rather than viewed as a replacement for necessary medical care.
