Now Walk It Out

Walking is something we do every day. Because it provides health benefits, we all should realize the importance of such a basic activity, and do more of it!

A recent Medscape article talked about a study done that set out to answer the question: What’s the bare minimum physical activity one has to do to counteract the harmful effects of sitting too much?

ANSWER: 5-minute light walk after every half hour of sitting

Effects:

  1. 58% reduction of blood sugar spikes after eating (comparable to using diabetic medications)
  2. reduction of systolic blood pressure by 4-5mmHg (similar to exercising daily for 6 months)
  3. significant improvements in fatigue and mood

This is a reminder that our sedentary lifestyles are harmful to our health and contribute to weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and these things can ultimately lead to heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

It may not be feasible for us to take a 5 minute walk every 30 minutes, but in whatever capacity you can incorporate movement into your daily schedule, please do so. Every cell in your body will thank you!Dr. Marisse
